Roy Lichtenstein’s, Thinking Nude, State I, 1994, is one of Lichtenstein's Thinking Nude series, this time created in shades of blue instead of black like Thinking Nude, 1994. This print explores Pop Art printmaking, the female form through bold linework, flat primary colour and Ben-Day dots. The reclining nude is rendered in Lichtenstein’s unmistakable graphic style, this time with the outlines of blue, a visually immediate image rooted in the language of mass media and commercial printing.
Beyond its striking appearance, Thinking Nude reflects Lichtenstein’s ongoing commentary on femininity, representation and popular culture. By borrowing from comic strip imagery, the work balances humour with cultural critique.
